Teacher Training – CELTA CERTIFICATE Program


Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

There are two CELTA Certification Programs offered through ELS. There is an intensive, 4-week, 120-hour Cambridge CELTA course taken entirely on campus in Tacoma, Washington. The other is the Cambridge CELTA Online course which is 12 weeks with 2.5 of those weeks on campus in Tacoma, Washington for the teaching practice component. Courses are designed to prepare individuals with no prior teaching experience to teach in either an ESL or EFL (overseas) setting. It is ideal for those either starting their careers or currently teaching and looking for enrichment through a teaching credential.

The courses, moderated by Cambridge English, feature workshops on teaching skills, language awareness and lesson planning, with six hours of observed and assessed teaching practice and written assignments. The program focuses on professional development skills with an emphasis on working overseas, and also includes support for finding a teaching job upon completion of the course.

The programs are located in Tacoma, Washington, near Seattle, on the campus of Bates Technical College. Candidates interested in taking the CELTA Certification courses must be at least 20 years old, have graduated from high school or have the equivalent qualification and, if a non-native English speaker, have an IELTS™ score of 7.0 or a TOEFL® score of 89. CELTA graduates may receive graduate credit towards an MATESOL at two American universities.

Tacoma, WA (Bates Technical College)
