Intensive English Program (General English Stream)

ELS offer international students the option of studying an Intensive English Program with either a General English stream or English for Academic Purposes stream, depending upon their individual learning goals. The 12 levels are arranged into Beginner, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced so that students benefit from studying with other learners who have similar abilities and language objectives.

The ELS teaching model has been constantly improved to deliver maximum benefits for students, combining core classes with specific streams for all students enrolled in the Intensive English Program. From Level 101 to 103, all students study the same core units, which form the essential building blocks for successful language learning. From Level 104 (Intermediate level), students chose to study either General English or English for Academic Purposes units in the afternoons, while continuing to study in core classes in the mornings.

The General English classes give you the opportunity to improve your English by focusing on the skills you will need to communicate well in everyday business and social settings. The classes are designed to improve communication skills in the keys areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The afternoon Skills Enhancement Classes (SEC) let you apply what you learn in the morning; you have the opportunity to learn more about Australian culture, improve your vocabulary and use of idioms, and conduct meaningful and productive conversations.

All students are tested upon arrival and placed in an appropriate level for their English proficiency skills. At the beginning of each 4 week study session,  students are supplied with details of the criteria required to pass each class taken in that session and of the Grade Point Average (GPA) needed to pass that overall level. They will be required to demonstrate that they have participated regularly during classes, completed scheduled course assignments, tests and activities and made an improvement in their language skills in accordance with the prescribed ELS standards on the Objectives and Evaluation Criteria form for each class.
