Intensive English Program
(English for Academic Purposes Stream)
ELS offer international students an Intensive English Program to meet their individual learning goals.
The ELS teaching model is based on the principle of core classes for all students enrolled in the Intensive English Program and these classes form the essential building blocks for successful language learning – each level builds upon the other as students progress through the various stages.
With the choice of English for Academic Purposes or General English streams, the 12 ELS levels are grouped into Beginner, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced so that students benefit from studying beside other learners with similar abilities and language objectives
All students study the same core units from Level 101 to 103 (Beginner level). From Level 104 (Intermediate level), students have the choice of studying English for Academic Purposes or General English units in the afternoons, while continuing to study core classes in the mornings. Students studying English for Academic Purposes benefit from classes designed to build a foundation for communicative competency while starting to focus on academic literacy skills.
Afternoon Skills Enhancement Classes (SEC) are dedicated to academic preparation, typically improving academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Because the academic preparation begins at an early level, students acquire high level of English proficiency and are well prepared for academic study.
All students are tested upon arrival and placed in an appropriate level for their English proficiency skills. At the beginning of each 4 week study session, students are supplied with details of the criteria required to pass each class taken in that session and of the Grade Point Average (GPA) needed to pass that overall level. They will be required to demonstrate that they have participated regularly during classes, completed scheduled course assignments, tests and activities and made an improvement in their language skills in accordance with the prescribed ELS standards on the Objectives and Evaluation Criteria form for each class.
